An iceskating race and tour along 11 cities in Friesland
The Elfstedentocht on iceskates is the first and the oldest tour along 11 cities in the province of Fryslân. Until this day there have been 15 tours, the last one was in 1997. Every year the board, staff members and other workers organise the tour on paper. The definitive organisation of the tour depends on the weather.
A 200 km iceskating tour
The fact that the tour only can be held if there is a stringent winter with a lot of cold has contributed to the cult like status of this tour. It is also a heroic achievement to complete this tour, literally through the cold winter weather and wind. If you participate in the race or ride the tour as a regular skater: it's an epic achievement to complete the tour!
