"Nearly untrained at the start..."
I completed the tour nearly untrained because my wife and I had coincidentally taken a month-long trek to the base camp of Mt. Everest in Nepal, at an altitude of 6 km, at the end of 1996, leaving us full of red blood cells. At the end of December, I was back in the Netherlands, just in time to skate 50 km once. That turned out to be enough, although the Elfstedentocht was quite a torment. Fell several times, blood all over my face. Afterward, I walked back to my lodging in Leeuwarden in my socks.
