"Actually quite smart and 'funny' – a helmet!"
In 1985 and 1986, wearing a helmet was not yet a thing. By 1997, you saw more of them, but still sporadically.
While preparing for the race, we were skating on the Tjeukemeer when I fell forward onto my head due to sand on the ice, resulting in a significant crack in my eyebrow. I decided to start wearing a helmet after that, and I soon found out what that meant. I was laughed at, pointed at, and often heard André van Duin’s song "Willempie" being sung. I had quite a bit of fun with it.
