"Blacksmith from Balk repairs left skate"
February 21, 1985; Ice floes and thawing weather; many cracks. On the Slotermeer, the tip of my hard steel blade breaks off, resulting in a razor-sharp point on the glide side. Struggling and falling, I manage to reach Balk, where a friendly blacksmith rounds off the blade – with the skate still on my foot! With my left skate severely shortened, I still manage to reach the Bonkesloot within the time limit. Kudos to this unknown blacksmith from Balk! In Franeker, my brother’s girlfriend handed me a foraging package.
I had been a member since I was 16 (1965) but stopped in the late '70s, thinking there would never be another Elfstedentocht... So, I had to stand in line for half the night at the Amsterdam VVV office in front of the central station, relieved by my skating buddy.
