"Into the dark with my miners' lamp..."
1986: Poorly prepared, having missed training due to a bad flu. I flew back from Switzerland in a rush. Still, I started and felt good. I rode together with a woman from Friesland. I went faster, so I had to keep waiting for her. Along the way, I waited an hour for two helpers for her. After Franeker, it became very hard for her. In Dokkum, she needed to pee. I didn’t wait anymore and skated into the dark. She caught up with me with the two helpers. They passed me and kept going. The last stretch was incredibly tough for me. I finished 15 minutes too late, no medal.
The 1997 Tour
A second chance after 1986. In the dark, I skated towards Sneek. By Stavoren, it was against a wind of force 5. I found a group and joined in. Took it easy for a while and then joined the next group.
In Franeker, I saw my fan club. With my miners' lamp and motor goggles, I skated into the dark. I was going fast and taking risks. On the Oudkerkstervaart, I skated hard into the edge. I fell forward on my chin, a lot of blood, I put a tissue on it. The finish: stamp, first aid, chin stitched, kiss from Minco, medal earned.
