"In the distance, Franeker appears, what a joy!"
1963
In the distance, Franeker appeared, what a celebration there! After that, it was under the last bridge into the darkness. It was so great to see Bartlehiem appear, just a little more to go to Dokkum and back. On the Dokkumer Ee, it was two-way traffic. Tractors at the side were shining bright lights on the ice, and blinded by the light, I missed a turn, hit the bank, and ended up in the meadow. I shook off the snow and kept going. After 13 hours of skating, Bonkevaart came into view. My first medal was in!
1986
For my second trip in 1986, I ended up with the Visser family, Brederostraat 7 in Leeuwarden. What a warmth and care we received there. Mrs. Visser suggested that porridge was a great breakfast for skating. The next morning, hot porridge with syrup was waiting for us. Even after the trip, I was pampered with my 3 companions. In 1996, my bed was ready again at the house of my "Leeuwarden mother," as she called herself.
1997
My parents were so proud that I was going to ride the Elfstedentocht for the third time. My father followed the race on TV. To stay updated on my progress, he gave me a few envelopes with his phone number on them. Inside the envelope was a little money. I could give this to spectators along the way, asking them to call and let him know where I was at that moment. People were happy to make the call, but no one accepted the money. Unfortunately, I had to quit in Franeker this time due to an injury.
