Every child has the right to learn how to skate

Datum: 23-01-2025

Due to the absence of good, harsh winters with natural ice, fewer and fewer children are coming into contact with ice. As a result, they miss out on the unique winter experience of moving freely on the ice. And, as with many other things, it turns out that what is learned young is done old. As the Elfsteden Association, we would like to change this.

As a committed organization, we believe that every child has the right to learn how to skate. That is why, together with the Province of Fryslân, Sport Fryslân, Gewest Fryslân, and the skating schools of Thialf and the Elfstedenhal, we have joined forces to give as many children as possible the joy of skating.

For the first time in the more than hundred-year history of organized skating in Fryslân, all major parties are combining their efforts for this essential project for the sport of skating.

Thanks to a special four-year financial contribution from the Province of Fryslân, our association, and Gewest Fryslân, we have developed the school skating program "The 11StedenBattle" as joint partners. This program is not only affordable but also aligns with the experience and interests of children in grades 5 through 8.

We teach children the fundamental basics of skating in an engaging way and conclude the program with a real interactive Elfstedentocht. This allows children to experience the joy of skating through play – with the right guidance. This year, the ElfstedenBattle takes place on March 28. Is your school joining too?
