FAQ becoming a member

To become a member of our Association, you must be at least 18 years old on the day of registration. Furthermore, you must have a skating skills declaration signed by two current members of the Association, who can confirm that you are capable of completing a 200 km journey in one day. Everyone who became a member of our Association after June 1, 2014, will be placed on the waiting list. This list is processed in the order of arrival. Each year, just before the payment round, the number of cancellations is reviewed. If, for example, 50 cancellations occur at that time, the first 50 people on the waiting list will be promoted to full members.

Everyone aged 16 and older* who can skate well and is expected to complete the journey can become a member of the Royal Association of the Friesian Eleven Cities. The skating skills of the prospective member must be endorsed by two members of the Association in a skating skills declaration.

*For 16- and 17-year-olds, in addition to the skating skills declaration, a signature from their legal guardians is required on the registration form.

New members are placed on the waiting list in the order of arrival. Each year, at the end of September/beginning of October, it is determined how many people can move forward as full members.

You can do this through the registration forms listed on our website (the skating skills declaration does not need to be filled out). You will then become a non-riding member of our Association. You can also send an email or letter with your full name and address details.

Due to privacy legislation, we are not allowed to provide our members' data to third parties. Therefore, you will need to find two members of our Association within your own network.

Unfortunately, this is not enough. You will need to find two members of our Association who are willing to declare that they believe you are capable of skating 200 km in one day.

People with foreign nationality must also be members of our Association in order to participate in the Elfstedentocht on skates.

You can only participate in the Elfstedentocht if you are a member of our Association and are no longer on the waiting list, but a full member. You can check this – if you are already a member – by checking your personal page via "login for members." If you do not meet these conditions, you cannot participate in any upcoming race. You can apply for membership throughout the year and will be placed on the waiting list in the order of arrival.

In this case, you can simply mention your membership number and sign the skating skills declaration. However, you must notify the Association that you have lost your membership card.

As a member of our Association, you may sign a skating skills declaration a maximum of twice per year. The condition is that you must be able to accurately assess whether the person in question is capable of skating 200 kilometres in one day. The Association year runs from August 1 to July 31.
