Becoming a member

Anyone aged 16 and older who is skilled in skating and can reasonably be expected to complete the tour may become a member of the Royal Association of the Frisian Eleven Cities. The skating abilities of the candidate member must be endorsed by two members of the Association through a skating proficiency declaration.

* For individuals aged 16 and 17, in addition to the skating proficiency declaration, a signature from their legal guardians is required on the registration form.

Since the winter of 2015/2016, all active members are allowed to participate in the Elfstedentocht. Previously, only members with “the right to start” could participate in each Elfstedentocht, while members with “a chance to start” could only participate in either an even or odd year. With the new membership policy, the distinction between members with start rights and start chances has been eliminated. Each of the 30,500 members who were registered as active members on June 1, 2014, may participate in the next Elfstedentocht. As a result, new members are placed on a waiting list. You can apply year-round using the form provided. Your registration will be processed in the order it is received. Annually, the number of cancellations will determine how many members from the waiting list are promoted to active members. In the Elfstedenletter (which is published every November), we will inform you of the number of active members who have cancelled their membership and how many new members will be moved up from the waiting list.

If any of the required documents are missing, your registration will not be processed. We will notify you and give you the opportunity to send the missing documents. Membership fee

The membership fee is collected annually in October. The fees are as follows (prices in euro's):

• For active members: €12.50
• For members on the waiting list: €6.00
• For non-active members: €6.00
• New members pay a one-time administration fee of €11.35.
